First Rides Training Article So now your ready to get on your horse for the frist time. You finally got all the ground work, spooking proofing, long lineing, had the bit in his mounth and showed him giving to pressure and advanced leading the list goes on and on.
Before I get on a horse for the first time I spend about a month to a month and a half on ground work. I want to be atleast 85% sure that the horse isnt going to do anything when I get on him for the first time. Here are the steps for getting on for the first time and takeing the first steps. 1. I want you to take the stirup and put some weight in it with you hand. Look at his back legs and his head to see if he shows any signs of doing anything. I want you to do this to both sides of the horse. 2. Next I want you to play with the stirups, pat the saddle and also jump up and down. Do this to both sides on the horse. If your horse spooks from any of this. Try to slow down your movments then build them slowly back up til hes fine with everything. 3. Next I want you to put your foot in the stirup and put some weight in it. Looking and his hind feet then his head checking to see if he shows any signs of doing anything. Do this on both sides. You want your horse to stand still and be okay with it. 3A. If your useing a mounting block this is how you will do step number four: Put your foot in the stirup and bounce it some. Looking to the hind legs and head for any signs. Do this 3-4 times each side then move step 5. Make sure he is fine with you up on the mounting block. 4. Next I want you to put your foot in the stirup facing the hind legs the bounce around so now your facing his head. I want you to do this to both sides 3 to 4 times. I want the horse to be standing still and not showing any signs of doing anything. 5. Now I want you to go half way up. One hand on the bak of the saddle on hand on the horn. When you get half way up I want you to take your hand thats on the back of the saddle and pet the other side of him and play with the stirup. Do this to both side 2 - 3 times. (keep your hand on the horn and always be perpared to push yourself off the horse if he would begin to do something). 6. Now for the BIG step. I want you to picture him just standing there with you on his back like theres not a care in the world. Now go half way up, take you hand and pet him and move the stirup. Now take a deep breath and swing that leg over nice and easy. (not slow, but not to fast) sit down easy. Dont forget to breath and pet him and get right back off. Congrats!! You just had your first ride! I know its dosent seem like much, but wow you feel great about it. 7. Now I want you to do that again 2 more times. Each time staying there alittle bit longer. 8. Now this time when you get up there I want you to sit a minute then ask him to move with your reins Not your legs. They do not know what it means yet when you squeeze with your legs. I also want you to have them stand a minute before walking off because I dont want them to learn the minute you get on his back he starts moving(thats bad) Now your going to start walking him alittle ways then getting off, getting back on and walking him alittle further. Soon you will be walking full circles and riding him longer and longer. Why we get on and off so much at the beggining is to show the horse that we will get back off and that hes not stuck with us on his back forever and it also teaches them to stand and gets them use to us getting on and off. Also when you start riding him more I want to you start getting on and off both side of the horse. This is a great thing to teach your horse. I hope you have learned something for the aritcle. If anyone has any qeustions please feel free to ask. | First Rides Training Video |
